Mr. Zionsville – Tyler Benson

Every year boys from the ZCHS senior class perform a talent show, competing for the title of Mr. Zionsville. This year, the winning act, and senior to take home the title of Mr. Zionsville, was Tyler Benson.

“My act was a combination between a classical piece, a more rock piece, and then I ‘Rick Rolled’ the crowd,” Benson said.

Benson played the bass, accompanied by his friend Charlie Chang who played the cello. He started with a classical piece that was one of Vivaldi’s cello sonatas, and melded this together with ACDC’s “Thunderstruck”. Then he came in with Rick Astley’s “Never Gonna Give You Up”, and the crowd went wild.

“Tyler and I have been best buds since middle school, and we both play instruments, so it was a really natural fit. It was a lot of fun,” Chiang said.

Benson’s favorite part of the show was the friendships he made because we would not have met some of the participants if it weren’t for Mr. Zionsville.

“I wasn’t going in wanting to win, I wasn’t going in with Mr. Zionsville in mind, I was going in to have that kind of experience. All those boys that I met, I wouldn’t have known them, and they’re so different and so unique,” Benson said.

Benson could not believe it when he won the title of Mr. Zionsville, and he felt incredibly happy.

“Every single one of those boys deserved that crown. I was happy and excited, I felt ecstatic. Everyone deserved that, and it happened to be me,” Benson said.

Benson may have been surprised about his win, but his friend Charlie Chiang and many audience members were not. Chiang said Benson’s act was one of a kind.

“I expected it because he’s Tyler Benson,” Chiang said.
