The Tide Pod challenge, which is a challenge that involves consuming Tide Pods, has recently gained popularity from social media. Lately, some teens and young adults have been considering eating Tide Pods because of their fruity smell and the new viral challenge. People began eating the Tide Pods, and it escalated into teens posting videos of themselves trying the laundry pods, resulting in many of them getting seriously hurt or even dying.

There have been 39 different exposures to Tide Pods within the first two weeks of 2018. That’s more cases than were reported in 2016.  Since people started purposely eating Tide Pods, Tide has made multiple public statements trying to discourage teens from the challenge.

Although they do look like candy, eating Tide Pods can cause mouth irritation, seizures, and can even cause the consumer to fall into a coma. Most laundry pods are made of hydrogen peroxide and ethanol, and both of these ingredients have the power to burn the lining in your stomach, resulting in serious injury or death.

“Part of our job includes taking care of people who have done something that was not wise on purpose,” said poison specialist Gwen Christianson.

Tide has made public statements multiple times in an effort to discourage the consumption of Tide Pods.

“Tide Pods should not be played with, whatever the circumstance, even if meant as a joke. Like all household cleaning products, they must be used properly and stored safely,” said Tide representative Petra Renck in a statement to the press.

If you or a loved one decides to indulge in the ultimate forbidden snack, do not induce vomiting and immediately call Poison Control Center (1-800-222-1222). This should go without saying, but please don’t eat Tide Pods.
