For the third season in a row, Zionsville Indoor Percussion continues to dominate competitions. Two years ago, ZIP placed tenth in Winter Guard International and then last year, they placed fifth.

This year, they are hoping to medal and with their recent win at state, the next year Zionsville will likely advance from A to open class. This would make it so that Zionsville will compete against other groups with greater abilities with the drum line.

“If we are able to medal at this Worlds Competition, it would be a tremendous reputation for our program and for Zionsville,” Kate Duckworth, junior, said.

WGI competition is this coming week from April 20th to the 21st. However, all of this success does not come without a lot of hard work.

“The work we put into the show we have is insane. Our schedule starts in about November and lasts until [the end of] April. We practice Tuesday and Thursday from 5:45 to 9 and have camps or competitions on Saturdays from 8 am to 5 pm. We usually get back around 10 pm on competition weekends. It’s a very rigorous and tiring schedule, but to be apart of a group that is capable of winning three state titles in a row is unlike anything else,” Duckworth said.

Madison Smith, junior, reflected on her favorite memory from their season.

“My favorite memory is probably just getting close to my cymbal line and becoming such great friends with them,” Smith said.

Duckworth’s favorite memories had to do with forming friendships as well.

“Most of my favorite experiences are meeting other people from the groups we compete against. It’s a very connected activity. We always find or get followed by other kids on Instagram and everyone enjoys watching our show, as we love watching theirs! We get a lot of love for our shows and it’s nice to have an activity that lets us connect to people from all over the country,” Duckworth said.

So hopefully, Zionsville indoor Percussion is able to perform well at WGI and finish out their season as strong as they usually do.
